1980年に英語学者、批評家の渡部昇一は、『週刊文春』に発表したコラム「神聖な義務」で自発的断種を説き、諸家の批判を集めた。渡部は同コラムで大西巨人家の事情に不正確に紹介、批判的に言及し、大西巨人から誤りを指摘されながら、対応することをせず、発言を続けた。一連の経緯をたどり、論争が成立しなかったことを指摘すると共に、渡部の言論公表者としての責任を問うたもの。
