『三国志演義』（以下、『演義』）における関羽の視覚的特徴のうち、正史『三国志』に見えるのは「美髯」のみである。それ以外は『演義』成立までに徐々に関羽の視覚的特徴として加えられた。本稿はまず『演義』における関羽の視覚的特徴の由来や背景を確認する。次いで『演義』のそれが関羽の視覚的特徴のスタンダードとして普及すると同時に、実はそれをもって関羽の視覚的特徴の完成にはならなかったことを指摘する。以上を踏まえて、最後に『演義』を超えた関羽像の変遷の意味するところを考察する。
