『三国志演義』（以下、『演義』）において関羽は死後に「顕聖」して「頓悟」したにもかかわらず、直後に呂蒙・曹操に祟るという矛盾が見られる。本稿では、関帝信仰の文脈や『演義』の成立史を踏まえてこの矛盾をどう理解したらいいのか考える。怨霊として語り伝えられた段階での関羽像、宋代以降に善神になっていった段階での関羽／関帝像を、それぞれそれが分かる伝説によって確認し、その後で元末明初に成立したとされる『演義』に見られる矛盾をどう理解したらいいのかについて、二つの点から検討した。
